People-first language should be used when speaking to a person about their addiction issues, because it is a reminder that first and most importantly, a person always remains a person.

The effects of long-term drug abuse affect more than just the individual. Each year in America, illegal drug use costs $193 billion in lost productivity, health-care expenses and crime-related costs, according to the World Health Organization.
The most direct affect of a person engaged in long-term drug abuse is deteriorating health. Death is the ultimate cost of drug addiction and every 13 seconds someone in the United States dies due to addiction. In 2016, more than 1.3 million Americans visited the emergency room for a drug-related incident.
Drug addicted people will do anything necessary to get their drug of choice and this includes; lying, stealing and engaging in other criminal activities.
